Care & Cleaning Guide
A little regular care keeps your blinds and curtains looking their best for years. Here's how to clean each type the right way — and what to avoid.
The golden rule: dust little and often. A quick, regular dust stops grime building up and means you'll rarely need a deeper clean. For spills and marks, deal with them promptly and gently — and always test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first.
Roller blinds (blockout, sunscreen, dual)
Dust with a soft brush or vacuum on low suction using a brush attachment. For marks, wipe gently with a cloth dampened in warm water and a little mild soap, then let the blind dry fully before rolling it up. Avoid soaking the fabric or scrubbing the blockout coating.
Cedar & timber venetians
Dust slats with a soft cloth, duster or slat brush — close the blind and wipe in both directions. Timber doesn't like water, so use only a barely-damp cloth for marks and dry immediately. Never soak cedar slats.
Aluminium & faux wood venetians
These handle moisture well. Dust regularly, and for a deeper clean wipe the slats with a damp cloth and mild soapy water. Great for kitchens and bathrooms where you may want to wipe more often.
Zebra (day-night) blinds
Dust gently with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum. Spot-clean marks with a lightly damp cloth and a dab of mild soap, dabbing rather than rubbing the sheer stripes. Don't immerse the fabric or scrub hard.
Roman blinds & curtains
Vacuum with an upholstery brush on low suction to lift dust. For a deeper clean we recommend professional dry-cleaning rather than machine washing, especially for lined or blockout fabrics, which can shrink or lose their finish.
Honeycomb (cellular) blinds
Dust or vacuum gently on low suction. A puff of compressed air or a hairdryer on the cool setting clears dust from inside the cells. Spot-clean marks lightly with a damp cloth — avoid soaking, which can flatten the cells.
Plantation shutters
Dust louvres with a soft cloth or brush, tilting them to reach both sides. Our basswood shutters have a protective coating — a barely-damp cloth is fine for marks. PVC shutters can handle a damp wipe with mild soapy water, ideal for wet rooms.
Motorised blinds
Clean the blind itself as per its type above. Keep remote and motor batteries fresh, and never force a motorised blind by hand. If anything stops responding, start by replacing the batteries; if that doesn't fix it, contact your motor's manufacturer or get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction.
What to avoid on any blind
- Abrasive cleaners, solvents, bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Soaking, hosing or machine-washing made-to-measure blinds.
- Scrubbing hard, which can mark fabric or damage coatings.
- Steam cleaners on timber, fabric or coated blockout blinds.
